Favorite places in Utrecht
My top favorite place is the University Library in the city center (former Humanities Library). It’s housed in the former palace of Louis Napoleon (brother of the famous emperor/sour candy). He was kind of an odd king (favored by the Dutch, disliked by his brother) of an odd kingdom (Holland, a country that only existed for 4 years). Beautiful combination of books, history and oddity.
My favorite activities
Cycling through the center, drinking at the canal, just wandering about and soaking in this beautiful town.
Where I like to go out
I like to drink a beer at Kafe België or Mick O’Connels. I’m more of a beer girl than a dancing queen.
Favorite shops
IJs&Zopie is a definite favorite: best ice cream and coffee in town. For bread it’s het Vlaamsche Broodhuys.

Favorite places in Utrecht
All the canals, Janskerkhof in winter with Christmas decorations hanging from the trees, and Mariaplaats in summer where you can have a drink while listening to music drifting through the open windows of the music department of the University of the Arts.
My favorite activities
Having drinks with friends in one of the cafés surrounding Dom square, continuing our quest for the best tapas restaurant in Utrecht and simply enjoying all the crazy people that elbow their way through the crowded streets along the Oude Gracht.
Where I like to go out
‘t Gras van de Buren and bars surrounding the Neude.
Favorite shops
Boekhandel Bijlevelt, where I always buy more books than I should; all the shops in the Twijnstraat, where I don’t actually buy anything but just like to look around; and something called the ‘Kruideniersmuseum’, where they sell the best traditional Dutch candy in the cutest little shop!

Favorite places in Utrecht
Twijnstraat aan de Werf (street at the wharf); it is the only place along the canal where houses are built directly along the wharves and very close to the water. Another favorite place is Wilhelmina Park, with its beautiful trees and ponds. It’s a great place to wander or do some people watching.
Favorite activities
I have recently begun to explore neighborhoods outside the city center. Utrecht has a lot to offer, and it can be rewarding just to walk around places where you would normally not go, like Lombok or the beautiful green area of Lunetten.
Where I like to go out
A special place is Café Olivier, a bar located in a former church, just outside shopping mall Hoog Catharijne. They have an elaborate beer menu, helpful staff and it’s always crowded and “gezellig”. Other favorites are the art house cinemas like Springhaver and Louis Hartlooper and the many festivals.
Favorite shops
It’s always dangerous for me to enter travel bookshop Interglobe close to Neude. I risk buying many more books than I have actually time to read. But it’s a wonderful place to get inspiration for new travels.
